Toyota 2JZ-GTE (GE & FSE) engine reliability and problems

In addition to the 1JZ, they produced the second, larger modification of the JZ called 2JZ. The engine replaced the past Toyota 7M. The 2JZ is a simple sort of a straight 6 cylinder motor with a hard cast iron cylinder block and 3 liter displacement. Comparing with the 1JZ, the block of cylinders became 14 mm higher. A crankshaft with a longer piston stroke (to 86 mm.) was mounted inside it. The motor is like the 1JZ. It has got two camshafts and 4 valves for each cylinder. The engine is equipped with an ACIS variable length intake manifold. Since 1997 the VVTi system was added. There are no hydraulic lifters on the motor. The valve clearance control is needed each 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of mileage. Firing order on the 2JZ is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The 2JZ has a toothed timing belt. Its life span is 60,000 miles (100,000 km) of mileage.
The 2JZ (2JZ-GTE modification) is more known and famous, than the 1JZ motor and is similar to the Nissan RB26DETT engine. The quickest and craziest Toyota Supra engines (1500-2000 horsepower) were made of the 2JZs. These cars drove ¼ mile quicker than per 7 sec. The fans installed the 2JZ in other Toyotas, and also in Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette, Camaro, different BMW, Mazda, and so on.

1. The 2JZ-FSE D4 modification (1999 – 2007) is a sort of the 2JZ engine with a direct injection system, which is similar to the 1JZ-FSE. It has got a compression ratio of 11.3, capacity of 220 horsepower at 5600 rpm. and its toque is 294 Nm (216 lb•ft) at 3600 rpm.
2. The 2JZ-GE type (1991 – 2005) is a kind of the 2JZ naturally aspirated engine. The first modification produced till 1997 had compression ratio of 10.5, 2JZ-GE stock injectors were 250 cc. Its capacity depended on settings and varied from 220 to 230 horsepower. When upgraded in 1997, the 2JZ was provided with a VVTi system, 3 ignition coils, another ECU broaching, etc. The capacity remained the same.
3. The 2JZ-GTE engine (1991 – 2004) is a sporting turbocharged 2JZ-GE modification. The motor was improved with CT20A turbochargers, intercooler, and the other pistons fitted to compression ratio of 8.5. The connecting rods were borrowed from the 2JZ-GE and the fuel injectors are 440 cc. The 2JZ-GTE camshaft specifications are as follows: duration 224/236 deg, lift 7.8/8.4 mm. Such engines developed a capacity of 280 horsepower at 5600 rpm. and had a torque of 435 Nm (320 lb•ft) at 4000 rpm.
The 2JZ-GTE modifications were designated for exporting. They were equipped with CT12B turbocharges, new camshafts (duration 233/236 deg, 8.25 /8.4 mm lift), and 550 cc fuel injectors. Due to those factors, the power of the exported 2JZ-GTE engine was increased to 330 horsepower at 5600 rpm. with a torque of 441 Nm (325 lb•ft) at 4800 rpm.
In 1997 the 2JZ was provided with a VVTi variable valve timing system. Its power remained the same, and its torque rose to 451 Nm (332 lb•ft) at 3600 rpm.

The 2JZ failures were similar to those of its younger brother, the 1JZ. Water can pour onto the spark plugs if washed. In such a case, your 2JZ won't start. The 2JZ is extremely safe and durable. If your motor has been properly maintained and only a high quality engine oil has been used, the 2JZ engine lifespan will comprise more than 300,000 miles (500,000 km) of mileage.

Everyone knows about the 2JZ's tuning. Although, some basic principles are worth mentioning.
It's no use upgrading the 2JZ-GE. You can certainly buy all the necessary performance cams, ITB, do head porting, mount an aftermarket intake system, headers and performance exhaust system.
When the engine has been built, it will develop not bad capacity, but the 2JZ-GTE equipped with a simple boost-up will be more powerfull and simpler.
You can buy a 2JZ-GE turbokit (Garrett GTX30) with a complete set of details and bolt the 2JZ-GTE pistons on or a thick 3 mm cylinder head gasket. You can also buy a 80 mm throttle body and adjust it on the Greddy E-Manage. As a result, you can get about 450 horsepower.

The simplest and most reasonable thing is a purchase of a powerful 2JZ-GTE and swap.
The boost-up is to the first step to upgrading the engine. For doing that, you need to get a big intercooler, huge radiator, oil cooler, air filter, Toyota Supra US (280 lph) fuel pump, and fuel injectors. The stock can be remained or you can buy 550 cc stock fuel injectors. Also, you will need a performance exhaust system 3″, ECU Mines/Blitz (or something like that), and a boost-controller.
All the aftermarket parts allow increasing pressure in the stock turbochargers up to 17-19 psi (1.2-1.3 bar) in order to generate 450 horsepower.
If that doesn't suit you, you will have to buy a 2JZ-GTE turbokit (Garrett GTX3582R), 264 deg. camshafts, Walbro 400 lph fuel pump, 1000 cc fuel injectors, and ECU APEX'i Power FC. That will help generate up to 750 horsepower.
It is dangerous to exceed that limit while dealing with the 2JZ stock internals. Otherwise, you can face the music. For further increasing the engine's capacity, it would be better to acquire new forged pistons with reinforced Carrillo connecting rods, ARP head studs; you also had better improve the cylinder head and buy the camshafts (272 – 280 deg.), as well. In addition to that, you have to get more powerful turbokit and gain the engine's capacity to 1000 – 1500 horsepower or more.
